RINGWORM

Causes

1. Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection (tinea) caused by skin-to-skin contact with infected person or contact with objects used by an infected person. 

2. Like all fungal infections there is higher risk of Ringworm in warmer climates or where bedding or towels are shared or in wearing tight clothing.


Symptoms

1. Ringworm causes itching and appears as a red circular rash on the skin is the sign of ringworm.  

2. It can occure on any part of the body but is more frequent on the foot (tinea pedis), jock itch or dhobi itch (tinea cruris), scalp ringworm (tinea capitis), nail infection (tinea unguium), body ringworm (tinea corporis). 

3. Ringworm typically begins as a flat scaly area on the skin, which may become red and itchy. This patch develops a slightly raised border that expands outward — forming a roughly circular ring.

Prevention

1. The best way to prevent Ringworm is keep your skin clean with frequent use of soap and water.  

2. Stay cool and dry - don't wear clothing for long periods of time and avoid excessive sweating. 

3. Avoid skin to skin contact with infected persons and avoid sharing personal items like clothing, towels, hair brushes and other personal items.
